CHAPTER SIX

A FEW days later, Alice worked out why she had been feeling so rotten. Partly, it had been because her life seemed to have suddenly undergone a few dramatic and highly unwelcome changes, and partly, she now realised, it had been because she was coming down with flu. She awoke with her head throbbing and her throat feeling as though it had had several layers rubbed off, so that swallowing anything was like sticking fire down her throat. She telephoned Victor at seven-thirty promptly, knowing that he would be at work.

‘I’m sorry, but I can’t come in today,’ she told him. ‘I’m in a dreadful way. I think I have flu.’

‘Have you been to the doctor?’ He didn’t sound entirely sympathetic to her cause, she noticed. ‘How long do you think you’ll be out of action? There’s a stack of work to be done here.’

Well, that puts my mind at rest, she thought, lying back against the pillows and fiddling with the telephone cord.

‘I have no idea. I’ll have a word with my virus and see if we can agree on something, shall I?’

‘No need for sarcasm, Alice. But if you’re going to be away for the rest of the week, then I’ll sort something out with a temp.’

‘I’ ll try and make it in tomorrow,’ she told him wearily.

‘Fine. See you then.’ And she was left with the sound of the dialling tone in her car.

Trust him, she thought, closing her eyes and wishing that she could muster up the energy to get out of bed and do something rather more constructive than just lying down in a state of misery and inertia.

When she next opened her eyes, it was to find that it had gone twelve o’clock, and so the remainder of the day continued, until seven that evening when Vanessa returned, made her something light to eat and brought it into her room, making huge fanning motions with her hands.

‘I can’t afford to come down with anything,’ she said, gingerly depositing the tray on the bed and stepping backwards, as though afraid of being jumped on by a swarm of unruly bacteria. ‘I have a Very Important Date tonight.’

‘Steve?’ Alice found it hard to keep track of Vanessa’s various men.

‘Old hat.’ She forgot about flapping away the germs and perched on the bed. ‘Way too boring, as it turned out. I wanted to trip the light fantastic, and he wanted to stay at home and munch on home-cooked food.’

‘Poor chap,’ Alice said sympathetically, biting into a cheese and ham sandwich which tasted of cardboard. ‘Didn’t you tell him that you hated cooking?’

‘I must have forgotten to mention it,’ Vanessa said glumly, ‘or else I didn’t mention it often enough. Why on earth do most men hit thirty-five and then assume that night-clubs are no longer appropriate?’

‘Because they have sense.’

Vanessa laughed, throwing her head back, and then gathering her long red hair with one hand and pulling it over one shoulder. She was so completely the opposite of Alice that they couldn’t fail to get along.
